The Duna de Valdevaqueros, just a few minutes from Tarifa, is an immense golden sand dune, one of the largest many have ever seen, offering a spectacular and almost desert-like landscape on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. An unusual road cuts through the sands, sometimes buried by the wind (machinery constantly clears the sand), adding to the surreal nature of the place. From the top, the panoramic view encompasses the bay, the beaches of Tarifa, and, on clear days, Morocco and Africa across the strait. The blend of desert, vegetation, lagoon, and sea makes it a picturesque and wild spot, stunning at sunset. It’s an ideal playground for families: children love climbing, sliding, and jumping in the dune like in a desert, and you can even go sandboarding. For water sports, the beach below is famous for its wind: it’s an excellent spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and you can often spot a small lagoon where kitesurfers glide (sometimes under the watchful eyes of cows). It’s also a beautiful place for walks, photos, and picnics while watching the kitesurfers. A few precautions are often mentioned: the wind can be very strong, and the sand stings the legs and face (bring sunglasses and a cloth to cover up), and above all, do not park along the roadside near the dune, as police checks and fines are frequent.
